Mina in Japan and West Germany

I’m revisiting Mina in Japan and West Germany and thinking about her as a transnational star again. In particular, I’m concentrating on the covers of singles released in these two countries between 1960 and 1965 as a way of understanding Mina’s star image as it is constructed in these countries, and what it then reveals about her potential to ‘produce cultural meaning in relation to (but not dictated by) the existing power structures of nations and states, to remain mobile, flexible, and open to multiple avenues of meaning and pleasure in different contexts of politics, social relations, and cultural assumptions’ (Meeuf and Raphael, p. 2).
