So whose nostalgia is it anyway? Mina and Milleluci, 1974

I’m starting work on the RAI series Milleluci and looking specifically at the way in which the past is represented and a certain version of the past constructed through the ways in which the show recreates variety shows and performances of entertainment genres from yesteryear.

As I wrote earlier this year in response to my first viewing of the series, I’m still having trouble with the nostalgia that is showcased on this show, particularly as it seems to work at various levels. There is the nostalgia expressed for these various entertainment genres, that then come either from different national contexts, and thus express different connotations that are Italianised by the programme, or from different historical periods, and thus problematise Italy’s relationship with its past. This is particularly the case with the episode dedicated to the radio, which remembers with rose-tinted glasses the advent of Italian radio programming and nostalgically celebrates the performers and music of the 1930s, and deliberately overlooks and trivialises the context of the Fascist regime within which such programming and performances were situated.
